An unidentified Tibetan youth staged a lone protest early Tuesday morning in front of a police station in Lithang County, Ganze Prefecture, a Tibetan area in Sichuan Province.

“He held the Dalai Lama’s portrait high and called for the freedom of Tibetan people and the return of the Dalai Lama,” says Loga, a Tibetan monk from Lithang who lives Dharamsala, India.

According to Loga, who is also a treasurer of Sera Med Monastery, a group of dark uniformed police arrived shortly after his protest and took him away in a police car.

The protest took place over a month after a well-known Tibetan lama from the area died in Chinese prison while serving life sentence. On July 31, Rongye Adrak, another prominent political prisoner, also from Lithang County, was released after completing his sentence.

Tibetans in exile say the county has been under heavy security restriction in the recent weeks.
